[MHN Seoul] The film 'The Bar'(El Bar, directed by Alex de la Iglesia) screened out of competition at the 67th Berlin International Film Festival is hitting the theaters in Korea on the 15th. When the film 'The Bar' was released in Spain on March 24th, it did well recording the second best at the box office following the film 'Beauty and the Beast'

On an average morning in Madrid, 'The Bar' is crowded as usual. Out of blue, a man gets gunned down as he leaves the bar, then another man who goes to help also is shot dead. Everyone else is just trapped inside the bar and start panicing. Phone signal does not work and the TV news offers no clear words about what happened there at all. When they realize the dead bodies are disappeard, the square outside the bar is soon abandoned. While they are afraid to leave, a grotesquely swolen man is found dead in the toilet. In confusion, the mystery becomes even more unsolvable and there is absolutely nothing they can do.

Rumors start to circulate by the remaining customers then. Would it be alien's act? Biological experiment organization run by the government? or Is there any sniper or terrorist here? However, the people killed ahead were a sweeper and a banker. Fear, especially confronting death, arouses human's bery basic instincts. Whether it is a 30-ish publicist agent and bearded hipster, a religious fanatic beggar, the barman who has worked there for 15 years, a beautiful young woman, or an old lady who plays slot machines all the time, they are trapped with no exit route and their fear and anxiety increase.

The film 'The bar'points out the government action and concealment towards quarantined detainees and uncertain reality from the terrorism, and criticizes attitudes toward the racism and prejudice by black comedy. It also reminds when Islamist militants attacked the Bataclan concert hall, cafes and bars in Paris in November 2015 and seems like showing the fear of it spreaded in Europe.

The extreme tension of facing death either staying in or outside the bar, they start killing one another off, or trying to. In the sealed small bar, the underground cellar, and the sewage tunnel, the subsequent events are unpredictable with blends of thrills, suspense, tension. What about cooling off the hot weather by the thrilling situation? and if you were trapped in the bar right now, what would you choose to do? Runtime 102 minutes, Certificate: 15
