This week may be cool after the long-awaited rain showers, but starting from next week the weather forecasts are looking pretty sweaty. 

Many houses will be preparing fans and air conditioners for the summer, so here we introduce a place to cool off, at a 'cave'. 

Thinking of the electricity bill, turning on the a/c might not be such a good idea but then again fans aren't so helpful neither. If you are in the middle of such dilemma, visit the Gahak mining cave around Seoul at Gwangmyoung city where you'll be cooled off in no time. 

This cave isn't by nature but was built for mining back during the colonization of Japan. This heartbreaking historic site was known for having gold, silver, copper, and zinc but the Japanese took all of it away as soon as the war ended so it's still unknown on how much were mined. During the Korean War, it was used as a shelter for the locals and before its terminate close down on 1972, it was the main site that took part of Korea's modern industrialization. It re-opened in 2011 as an open park for everyone. 

Gahak Mining Cave is located under Gahak mountain of Gwangmyoung city, Kyunggido. It could seem far since it's in Kyunggido but it's where the borders of Gumcheon, Seoul meets with Gwangmyoung so you can visit by hopping on to Seoul subways or mini buses. 

If you walk up for five minutes from the parking lot you will see the entrance of the mining cave. It's not a free come and freely watch type of tour but every 15 minutes you can enter with an instructor who guides you through. You just enter in order by the waiting number you receive printed from the information desk and wait inside the cool cave until the screen calls your number to enter. 

Once it's your turn you put on a safety cap and enter. The cave is pretty high but the safety hats are a must since the ceilings are uneven. 

The inside of the cave shines in all kinds of colors. Instead of the noisy constructions sounds, relieving background is playing and instead of the miners' sighing the laughter of kids fill the room. Somewhat of sentimental emotions rush through as the place holds such history from the past and until now. 

Gahak mountain is a hard rock mountain that doesn't have any pillars but only caves. The holes are everywhere on the ceiling, horizontally, and underground creating a maze-look. 

Interestingly enough under the cave, there's plenty of spring water underneath. When mining back in the day, it was one of their problems to solve on how to drain the pumping water outside, and despite the hard work of pumping all the water out of the next day water was filled up again just like yesterday. The water quality was also very clean so it was drinking water for the workers but since it's been abandoned for years now it's not drinkable but still clean enough for washing, cleaning, etc. It's also where the fish that live only in clean water live as well. 

There's also an exhibition hall too. The rocks that were mined here are displayed, sharing another atmosphere of life. There's also plants that grow inside of the cave by using artificial lighting and feeding it with underground water. 

Here's the 'Cave Wine bar' that was opened back in 2014. Since the inside of the cave keeps its temperature by 12 degrees all year long, it's a perfect place to ferment food. 

So far wine stored in this cave is sold in about 170 kinds of Korean wine, and it also opens wine-tasting events throughout the year. (every Sat/Sunday from 12PM - 4PM)

Many pieces from rocks to plants are displayed. In various shades of light, the gallery exhibits many mysterious creatures that look like they would live in the cave and pictures of what the miners who used to work here engraved are captured. 

There is also an 'Arts Center' inside of the cave. As a year-long event from the spark of light to re-simulating the cave's past, the flamboyant modern light of civilization and the life tree that signifies future's hopes all are lasered on the walls of the cave with a beam projector using computer graphics and nature pictures. The 'Media Show' is played from 9:10 am to 5:10 pm every 20minutes. No entrance fees are needed if you already paid the entrance fee of the cave. 

This mining cave that was once closed and abandoned is now re-created into a great work of art facility. Here you can remember the past of the cave and also have fun. Hope more places like this are built all around.
