"I can express my pain and anger through music"

[MHN Seoul] A documentary film about the legendary Japanese rock band X JAPAN has been released worldwide. 'X-Japan' was formed  as a speed metal band with 5 people in 1982.
The band has sold more than 30 million albums, singles, and videos combined. Also they sold out Japan’s 55,000-seat Tokyo Dome 18 times, and played to tens of thousands of fans outside of Japan including on the stages of all 3 legendary venues, Madison Square Garden and Carnegie Hall in the US and Wembley Arena in England. From intense speed metal to lyrical rock ballads, they have released a variety of hits like 'Endless Rain', 'Tears', and 'Kureni'.

The story of the rockumentary film 'We Are X' is told through the life of the band leader, 'Yoshiki' (drums, piano, keyboards) and 30 year history of X-Japan. Toshi (lead vocals, acoustic guitar), Pata (rhythm guitar, backing vocals), Sugizo (lead guitar, violin, backing vocals), Heath (bass guitar, backing vocals), and even the former members, Hide (lead guitar, backing vocals) and Taiji (bass guitar, acoustic guitar, backing vocals) are in the movie. Yoshiki's life is like a miracle in the darkness. From the time of the infant 's age, he was always so weak and sick that he was taken to the hospital for a third of the year. It was considered that he might not have been able to survive. He grew up on classical music. His parents bought him a classical piano when he was four years old and that was when he started playing classical. However, Yoshiki saw his world collapse when he was only ten finding his dead father's body. His father committed suicide by hanging and is had a profound impact on Yoshiki's life. What was worse, two members of X Japan, who were just like family, ended their lives with suicide.

A series of unfortunate events stuck the band soon after. In 1997 when it had been 15 years since they formed the official band 'X Japan', Toshi, who had been a friend of Yoshiki since they were 4 years old and formed an indie band 'X', decided to leave because a religious cult convinced him that the band was evil. It led to the dissolution of the group. 5 months after the last lave concert 'Rusty Nail', the guitarist 'Hide' was found dead from an apparent suicide, turns out, it was an accident caused by airway closure. Then, in 2011, another tragedy happened that the former bassist, Taiji, committed suicide in Saipan after he was arrested on a flight from Tokyo to Saipan. It was alleged he disrupted air crew duties and threw punches and kicks at windows and seats. In the despair, Yoshiki spent most of his time on playing the drums and piano madly and he became a total wreck in body. Almost a decade later, Toshi managed to leave the cult and return to the band. X Japan reunited in 2007 and recorded new songs. They still heal many fans through their music.

With X Japan's masterpieces like 'Art of Life', 'Without you' for Hide memorial summit, and so on, the film reminds of their glory days and memories. Through their behind story of disunity, dissolution, secession, and death, it is bitter and tough though, yoshiki tells a lot of messages that give hope to live through the movie 'We Are X'. Winning the Special Jury Award for Best Editing in Sundance's World Cinema Documentary Competition, 'We are X' directed by Stephen Kijak cries hopes. "We Are X"
