"Art brings the development of science technology and science technology brings in more inspiration for art"

The world's most beautiful animating production company 'PIXAR Animation Studio(PIXAR)' was found in 1986 by three young men Steve Jobs, in California and since been touching hearts through tears and laughter with films starting from 'Toy Story', 'UP', 'Inside Out', 'Finding Nemo', 'Monster Inc.' and more.

PIXAR is opening up their behind scenes in making these films to the audience in celebration of its 30th anniversary at DDP starting April 15th to August 8th by the 'PIXAR Animation 30th Anniversary Exhibition'. 

Before the event was opened, there was a press conference at the 4th floor of DDP's 'Baeum-teo' 11AM last 14th of April. At the conference, Sukyoon Yu the design manager of DDP, Sungil Hong from GNCGNC media and Maren Jones, the Exhibition Program manager of PIXAR were seated.

Yu said, "It's been 3 years since we opened DDP on 2014 March 20th. On behalf of its spirit of infinite dreams, beauty and enjoyment there's a lot in common with PIXAR's exhibition. It's my pleasure to hold this event." for the opening. Adding on he said, "I hope this PIXAR exhibition can be loved in many terms of quality and quantity." 

Hong representative introduced PIXAR as "PIXAR's start was like the Columbus egg, and that was 'Toy Story'. Animations were drawn by humans by hand, a picture of paper after paper. But 'Toy Story' was the first animation to be made with computer graphics, the start of today's 3D animation we experience."

"PIXAR's productions are a combination of authentic artistry and creativity with the world's best technology that can be offered now. The background behind these achievements is its intimate communication between workers and cooperation. That's where all the original ideas came from." Hong kept on mentioning PIXAR's strengths, with "Bug's Life especially created a view of insects by curating the leaves and water drops in the eyes of bugs by deeply considering nature."

Lastly, Hong said, "About 500 pieces are shown in this exhibition. And 60,000 tickets have already been sold through pre-orders. It's a first in Korea. I believe a lot of people have been waiting for it." expressing his surprise on how PIXAR is loved by Koreans. 

The moment Maren Jones, the exhibition program manager of PIXAR grabbed the mic, everyone focused. "John Lasseter, PIXAR's creative director believes in the power of the three sources in making a great animation. First, to tell the fascinating stories, second, have a real character who has passion, needs, and emotions in life to live, and last is to capture that character into the world that seems real." was how she introduced the strong points PIXAR shares. Jones went on, "Most people think of the most interesting story or the innovating technology PIXAR used when they think of PIXAR, but most people do not know that the start of all productions are from paintings, drawings, sketches, sculpture and other traditional ways of art fro scratch." sharing the hidden process of working at PIXAR. 

"If the director shares an idea of a movie, all artists come together to talk about design concepts or stories, art network development and start working on the visualizing process of the scenario, or characters, life and the worlds. From character analyzation to motion researching, texture, color, storyboard, color scripts, everything is decided then."

About the exhibition, Jones mentioned "There are spaces at the 'PIXAR' storage center where we save all art and crafts created during the process of moving making, and this is what you will be able to see in this event. The sketches of what made PIXAR is what you will be able to see. As you look around you will notice how the beginning ideas are very different from what came out."

"In this exhibition,  you can see two very special set up art pieces, one is the zoetrope used for 'Toy Story', and the other is an 'Artscape'. A zoetrope makes the 3D movements of the characters in Toy Story through illusions and an Artscape is a set up for the audience to fall deep into the world of PIXAR's art world." is what Jones furthered about the event. 

Lastly, Maren shared how "I want to share a goal with those who come to this exhibition. First is to share art pieces that PIXAR made in the making of films and the fact that even the most complicated work of art that is hard to bring to life with technology starts from a single piece of pen and paper. John Lasseter always wanted to share PIXAR's films with the world in such great passion and about ten years ago we met as many passionate people in New York when we first started the exhibition. From our starting productions to 'Good Dino' DDP has become the 30th place to curate our art. I want to say thank you instead of PIXAR and hope you enjoy it, we prepared it with great pride."

As soon as the three ended their remarks, Q&A time followed. Most of the questions were mainly for Maren Jones. 

To the question on what 'PIXAR's core theme is, Jones answered, "'PIXAR's theme is about the stories. The stories are the most important and the power factor that drives our animations. If there is no story, technology, ideas, and characters will lose its light."

On to the next question on if the exhibition was held under the same theme, she said "The spirit 'PIXAR' wanted to share in the beginning is the same now too. John Lasseter always wanted to share all the art pieces that were made in the progress of making movies, and wanted to celebrate it with artists of the works. The only difference from the 20th Anniversary Exhibition at New York is now we have more pieces and productions out."

On what the terms are in choosing the art pieces and timing of collecting the works Jones answered, "We started to collect them since the release of 'Toy Story'. We gathered them to use them as materials to enhance our understanding in productions in the future and the purpose of producing. So the works were sources to fill our needs when we wanted certain references for certain productions."

Will the technology presented in this exhibition, the 'zoetrope' and 'art scape' be fixed in the future too? Jones said "We could build more of them depending what may come but we can't be sure. Currently, we are to utilize the contents from the latest productions, and if needed build some more."

As the interviews ended, Maren Jones had an additional time on further explaining the future productions of PIXAR and also participating a Q&A session. 

PIXAR's 30th Anniversary Exhibition will be held at DDP from April 15th to August 8th from 10 AM to 21 PM. Curators will follow four times in weekdays, and twice on weekends.
