THE Artist is Present

MARIA ABRAMOVIC
Marina Abramovic widely called as the godmother of performing art, is an artist from Yugoslavia known for her provocative performances. Her art is driven in forms that involve risks and also been praised for her experiments through autobiographical and sexual roles of subjects.

THE MOST SPECIAL PERFORMANCE
In her 2010 retrospective, 'The Artist is Present', she sat down at one chair with her eyes closed, and waited for somebody to come up and sit right across her. The two would then just stare at each other. Without any words or movement, to only stare at each other was the only rule of this performance.

At this retrospective that was supposed to be another mark of Abramovic's own world of performance, an unexpected guest visited.

It was Ulay. Her lover from 22 years ago. The two fell in love in 1976 and were together for ten years as performing artists. "it was one of the most painful moments of my life. It was an end to one of my life's most important time, and beginning of a new time, but I couldn't stop crying.”

The two never met over the years, nor did they share a long conversation. They just stared at each other but that one-minute long moment was pow

erful enough to have her on her knees. Who knows, the minute-long-moment might've been a short reflection of their beautiful days as lovers. That wordless moment, must've been the best reunion.
